The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience, 818 Howard Ave

The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience explores the many ways that Jews in the American South influenced and were influenced by the distinct cultural heritage of their new homes. Through exhibits, collections and programs focused on the unique and remarkable history of Southern Jews, the Museum encourages new understanding and appreciation for identity, diversity, and acceptance.

Head over to Royal Street for some of the best galleries and antique shops in the city.

The shopping begins near the section of Iberville and Canal Street and continues through most of the Quarter. Royal Street is one of the oldest streets in New Orleans and is a must-stroll thoroughfare of the French Quarter. It begins at Canal Street, where it runs through the heart of the French Quarter, and continues downriver through the Faubourg Marigny, Bywater and eventually to the Lower 9th Ward. The most spirited section of Royal is found within the French Quarter. It is here where people flock daily to enjoy all that the street has to offer. With its well-preserved architecture and vivid flora, Royal Street is certainly one of the most beautiful streets in the entire city and a favorite spot for photography.

Visit the historic French Market, 1235 N Peters Street

Similar to some European markets, this open-air area features shopping, dining and music is a tradition that is uniquely New Orleans. From Café du Monde near Jackson Square to the bazaar at the end of Esplanade Avenue, there are five blocks of specialty retail shops and a community flea market with locally made jewelry, handmade crafts, cuisine and art.

Dinner at Tujague’s, 429 Decatur Street

As the second oldest restaurant in New Orleans, Tujague’s Restaurant has retained its reputation for providing an unforgettable dining experience. It has been a favorite for over 160 years, entertaining and satisfying the appetites of French Quarter patrons and lucky visitors.

Live music on Frenchmen Street

The most popular section of Frenchmen Street is a short strip in the Faubourg Marigny, just down river from the French Quarter. Day 2:  

Visit the French Quarter

Stroll through Jackson Square to see the iconic Andrew Jackson statue and the St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States. Jackson Square is also the location of an open-air artist colony, where artists display their work on the outside of the iron fence. Visitors even have the opportunity to see the artists at work and perhaps have their portrait drawn by one of the many talents utilizing Jackson Square as their studio. You can also grab coffee and beignets from Café du Monde while people watching in the Square.

Enjoy brunch at Chapter IV Restaurant, 1301 Gravier St.

Opened in 2023, by Chef Dook Chase and his wife, Gretchen, Chapter IV features a modern take on classic Creole dishes passed down from Chef Dook’s grandmother, the late Chef Leah Chase.

Laura Plantation: Louisiana’s Creole Heritage Site, 2247 Highway 18, Vacherie, LA

Travel back in time to Laura Plantation, an operating sugar farm built in 1805. On the grounds are 12 buildings on the National Register, including animal barns, overseers’ cottages and the 1829 Maison de Reprise. This tour is based on Laura Locoul Gore’s “Memories of the Old Plantation Home” and archival documents from the United States and France.

When visiting Oak Alley, guests are invited to walk under its iconic alley and explore their many historic exhibits. This National Historic Landmark is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history its inhabitants left behind.
